Album Review: Hozier (Island Records)

Irish singer/songwriter Andrew Hozier-Byrne is better known as Hozier. You might have seen his recent performance on Later With Jools or seen the posters advertising his debut album that seem to be everywhere.

The lead single off the album, Take Me to the Church has been a big hit in his native Ireland as well as America. It deserves to be a big hit in the UK too. The lyric might be controversial but the track has a melody that sticks in your head and refuses to leave. Just this one track is enough to get you involved in his music.

He has a captivating and soulful voice which is heard on Angel of Small Death, whilst on the track Jackie and Wilson you hear one of his finest moments: the track is anthem that sounds like it was written by Phil Lynott and Tears for Fears, if you could imagine that. From Eden, a waltz driven track sees him on fine form, whilst Sedated is another track that would be a good single.

At 13 songs long the album takes a while to reveal its power. This sounds like an artist who we will be hearing a lot of in the future.

I give the album 4 out of 5 and it is out now.
