Album Review: Macy Gray - The Way (Kobalt Music)

Macy Gray has an unmistakable voice and is always a performer who can be relied upon to deliver something different,

Her new album The Way, continues in her own style. The first two opening tracks find her in fine style: Stoned is a moody atmospheric track whilst Bang Bang sounds like she has got Lenny Kravitz on guitar trying to recreate the mood of Led Zeppelin!

Things become more mainstream on the joyful track Hands. Here we find Macy in upbeat mode singing the joys of being in love. It gets more atmospheric on the sublime track, I Miss the Sex" which has a dreamy piano loop that hooks you and draws you into the track.

The soulful, The First Time sees her rediscovering her roots. Need You Now is another hypnotic track that hits the bulls eye. With a succession of various producers you would think the album would suffer from not having any continuity but that is not the case.

The album ends on the track Life where Macy sings that "life is beautiful". This album is a great return from one of music's iconic performers.

I give the album 4 out of 5 and is out on the 7 October.
