Alex Hepburn, Jamie Cullum - Jazz A Juan, Juan Les Pins

Alex Hepburn
Alex Hepburn
Alex Hepburn might be a new name that you have not heard of before but by the end of this year I am sure you will know who she is.

This rising star from Scotland has a local connection too as Alex has been recording with James Newman, the older brother of Settle born John Newman who took Europe by storm last year with his debut solo single, Love Me Again.

Hepburn sounds vocally like a cross between Adele and Pink, her success so far has been limited to France and Switzerland where her debut album Together Alone has climbed into the Top Ten album charts.

The audience know her songs and her single Under is one of the best received tracks of the night. It seems that in the coming months the UK will be discovering the charms and talent of Alex.

Speaking to me before tonight's gig Jamie Cullum told me how excited he was to be playing again at Juan les Pins "It has so much history does this festival and I love playing my music here, I'd come back every year if they invited me" he enthused.

"I have a new album coming out in October which will consist of jazz standards that I really like" he shared. "They are tracks that I have always liked or ones that I have played on my weekly Jazz show on Radio 2" he continued.

He always seems to be a natural on stage but that is not always so as he told me " I get really nervous sometimes before I go on stage that's why you sometimes see me racing around the stage, it's nerves sometimes"

At tonight's gig he does just that during the opening number, One of Those Things" as he plays a set of drums at the front of the stage and then climbs atop his piano. Your conventional jazz artist he isn't.

I'm All Over It Now follows as he has the audience in the palm of his hand, he even goes walkabout through the audience as he sings Love for Sale.

One of Cullum's early tracks All At Sea sounds poignant tonight as you could hear the Mediterranean sea slowly moving the waves in the background. You do not get this atmosphere when he played at Sheffield City Hall last year!

After nearly two hours on stage it is time to say goodbye to him and his excellent band but I'm sure it will not be long before he is invited back to Juan again.
