Gig Review: Basement Jaxx - 02 Academy, Leeds

Gorillas, a ballet dancer and a gymnast on stage - it could only happen at a Basement Jaxx gig! Over the last 15 years Basement Jaxx has been at the forefront of dance music. Newer styles might have come along such as Electronic Dance Music but from tonight's packed crowd, it looks like they are still as popular as ever.

This is a concert where you leave your problems at the door because it is time to forget your worries and party. Mind you, it is easy when you have tracks like Red Alert and Where's Your Head At.

With a variety of guest vocalists throughout the evening there was never a dull moment. They opened up with one of their class tracks, Good Luck and asked the audience "Are you ready to party, Leeds?" of course we were.

It wasn't all past hits though as they performed new tracks of their latest album released earlier this year, Power 2 the People and Never Say Never sounded good and show a development in the song writing.

Raindrops was performed as a classical number - complete with the ballerina on stage.

It was left to their big hits Where's Your Head At? Rendezvous and Bingo Bango to close an entertaining and fun night. In the genre they perform in there is still no one to touch them in a live context. An early Christmas present indeed for Leeds and the band's fans.
