Gig Review: Mike And The Mechanics - Sheffield City Hall

Mike Rutherford might have been a founding member of Genesis but he also has his own band with Mike and the Mechanics.

In the late 1980's the band that had vocalists Paul Young (Sad Café) and Paul Carrack had a string of massive hits, most of which were performed tonight.

With Paul Carrack now having a successful solo career and Paul Young's untimely death 15 years ago, the vocalists in the group now are Tim Howar and Andrew Roachford (who had a big solo hit with Cuddly Toy).

Entitled "The Hits Tour" the gig was just that although a new track, Let Me Fly was premiered. Their debut single Silent Running got the gig off to a fine start, thankfully the sound engineer turned down the bass after this track which was beginning to reverberate the stalls and threatened to spoil the gig.

Surprisingly the band does perform some Genesis tracks with Turn It on Again and I Cant Dance receiving a huge response from the largely middle aged audience.

Both vocalists duet well on the track Get Up with both adding a soulful twist to the song. Andrew Roachford gets a chance to perform Cuddly Toy, his aforementioned hit.

The gig culminated with their biggest hits: The Living Years, All I Need is A Miracle and Over My Shoulder.

2 hours passed by in minutes after a night of great musicianship and hits. Superb.
