Gig Review: Saxon - 02 Academy Leeds

Celebrating 35 years together Barnsley rock act Saxon returned back to Yorkshire as part of their Warriors of the Road European tour which started in Athens.

"The Who are celebrating 50 years together and they are playing in Leeds tonight" informs lead singer Biff Byford " thanks for coming to see us instead and helping us celebrate 35 years together" he thanks the fans.

Part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the early 1980's, Saxon along with Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were the most successful acts of the genre.

Saxon's tracks are now part of heavy metal history; they commence the gig with one such track: Motorcycle Man. It still sounds as good as back in the day and they still perform the track with youthful energy. It is not all nostalgia though as the band is still recording and the set is a mix of old and new tracks.

Of course it is the tracks that defined the band such as Never Surrender, Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather, Princess of the Night that receive the best response.

"It's good to be back in England and even better to be back in Yorkshire" Biff informs the fans. It was certainly good to have them back and with this energy and passion with the band and the fans still intact, you can be sure that the band may even be celebrating their 40th year in the future.
