Interview: Veronika Vesper

Veronika Vesper
Veronika Vesper
Veronika Vesper is an artist who thinks outside the box. Inspired by Bjork, this musical rebel hates to be constrained. While her last single 'F*ck The Ego' showcased her ballsy attitude, her latest release 'Suffocate' showcases a radio friendlier alter ego.

When did you first realise you wanted to make music?

When I was like 5 years old I had a little keyboard with cool sounds in it so started creating something from it. Later on more consciously when I heard Bjork first, I was 14.

If you could go back to that day, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Believe in yourself and your talent more and don't be afraid/ashamed to be different than everybody else.

What is your writing process?

It varies, but most of the songs I wrote come to me when I'm sitting by the piano and just improvising in the flow, then a hook comes in...idea, lyric..I record it and then come back to it and craft a song around it .. or when I'm in the shower :-) sometimes I start with a track, beat in Logic and tune in and see what comes out..

Then you have to kill the darlings and strip it down and polish it and craft and leave it and go back until there isn't a single note or a word you're not hundred percent happy with.

That can take a month or more or less, every song is different.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Hmm, I don't really look for it, it kinda comes to me. When I'm on my own all I think of is art and visuals and music and ideas just appear in my head. If anything I'm really inspired by visuals, I love looking through alternative fashion magazines and art books. Music is visual for me as well, I mean.. I see music :-)

If your music were a person, what would their personality be? Where do you think it would live?

The dark part of the album would be a cool skinny tomboyish girl with dreadlocks and piercings...sorta grungy looking, deep and cool n interesting, who went through a lot in her life, doing drugs a bit ..living in a squat in an industrial area..

The light part is an alien creature made of light ..or looking a little bit like a being from Avatar, who is a multi dimensional being spreading love n light and shifting human consciousness ... there you go
:-))

If you had to cite your biggest three influences, what would they be?

Bjork, Depeche Mode and the universe.

What are your three favourite records of the moment?

Angel Haze - Dirty Gold , Sia - 1000 Forms of Fear , Die Antwoord - Donker Mag

What song do you wish you had written?

Sia - Chandelier ..first thing that came to my mind..

If you could collaborate with any living artist, who would it be?

Angel Haze is my favourite one at the moment.

Touring is a big part of a musicians life, what are your tour must haves?

Amazing costumes, reliable team and great food ....my world tour hasn't begun yet, so will fill you in on any changes later :-)

What makes a good live show?

Presence, audience interaction, right balance of letting people in and projecting. .. and loads of other things obvs.

What has been your favourite performance to date?

The one I enjoyed the most, was my recent showcase, which took place in a big industrial warehouse where I live.

It was a show on my terms, not restricted by venue or anything. I had zombies carrying me on stage and outfit changes and a story line..it was performance art, which I wanna do more of in the future.
