Jocelyn Brown - Hoochie Coochie, Newcastle

Worth a trip up the A1 is the Hoochie Coochie club in Newcastle - in only a couple of years the venue has built up a solid and respectable reputation amongst the soulful side of live music. Over the past 18 months the likes of Incognito (who return again in early May), Kenny Thomas and Gregory Porter have performed in the venue.

Jocelyn Brown may not play many gigs these days but she chose the Hoochie Coochie to play 2 very special gigs. She has sung on tracks from as varied artists as Incognito to Right Said Fred and recorded with dance acts such as Masters at Work.

She still has that powerful voice and aided by a young band that included 3 superb vocalists she never let down the faithful crowd gathered tonight, Opening up her set with her 2 biggest hits Keep on Jumpin' and Something Going On she seemed taken back by the warm welcome she received.

Dedicating her huge club hit, Worthy to dance producer and remixer Frankie Knuckles who sadly passed away a few weeks ago, she paid tribute to Knuckles who she had recorded with in the past.

Finishing off her set with the Incognito hit she sang lead vocals on, Always There, she sent a shiver down the spine with her soulful rendition of the song.

They thought it was all over but she could not leave the stage without performing her big hot, Somebody Else's Guy. A true legend amongst the soulful fraternity, tonight Brown left her reputation as one of dance music's greatest vocalists intact.
