Review: Skindred - Leeds University

With 3 support bands on before the main act takes to the stage, you can't accuse Skindred of short changing their fans.

The AC/DC track Thunder plays over the PA before the group appear. They have a great frontman in lead singer Benjii Webb, his command over his audience is a fine example of how to lead a band. Dressed in a red sparkly jacket and wearing shades, he is like a ringmaster taking control over this carnival of mayhem and menace.

They open up with the lead single off the new album. Under Attack is a superb track though the audience do not seem to warm to it as other tracks performed later in the set.

"It's good to be in Leeds" he offers, only to be drowned out by the crowd with cries of Yorkshire, Yorkshire! He gives in and then readdresses the audience with "Its good to be in Yorkshire" it's all good humoured though.

Whilst they may have the rock and power in their songs what is evident throughout is the melody. The audience take the older tracks in more so than the newer songs, perhaps it is because the album has only been out for a week and they are not familiar with the newer songs.

Kill The Power and Warning, two of their best tracks are saved until the end of the gig. The mosh pit is heaving and the temperature in the venue rises.

Great gig from a great band.
