Staycity Apartments - York

One of the most successful parts of the hospitality sector over the last few years has been the serviced apartment area with expansion continuing at a rapid pace.

Surprisingly York has not had one of the apartment chains open in the city so it was rife to be a hot spot for a chain to debut in this tourist and business centre: Staycity arrived in York at the end of July. Situated on Paragon Street next to the Barbican entertainment centre the apartments are a 10 minute walk from York train station.

Parking is available in the Q car park behind the hotel and there is a newly opened Co-op supermarket on the ground floor, which is very handy for any last minute food shopping.

Our arrival was very friendly yet professional. The staff on reception are an asset to the company. It was good to see the staff explain that to get to access the lift you had to swipe your apartment hotel card. I've been in some 5 star establishments where they forgot to mention this!

Our room was on the fourth floor with fantastic views over the Minster and city walls. The apartment was light, clean and well furnished. The 197 apartments comprise a range of studios, one and two bedroom apartments split over 5 floors. Prices start from £69.00.

Our studio came complete with a cooker with an electric fan oven and microwave for cooking (although in the smaller apartments there is just a microwave for cooking).

The kitchen also has a fridge, washing machine, toaster, kettle with sachets of tea and coffee along with plenty of pans There is even a dishwasher. A flat screen TV lets you relax so you can see your favourite programmes with a Netflix option too.

Within 15 minutes of arriving in the room we received a phone call from reception to ask if everyone was ok, which was a nice personal touch. We were even asked if we needed suggestions about places to eat. It is this attention to detail which will make the chain a success I think.

The bedroom had a very comfy bed with crisp white cotton sheets. The bathroom had a very effective rain shower although I was a little surprised to find that there was nowhere to plug in my electric shaver.

Upon asking at reception I was informed that they could sell me an adaptor to plug in my shaver, so if you are not having a wet shave I would advise you to take your own adaptor to plug into a wall socket. There are plenty of these which are good for charging up your iPad, mobile phone etc.

The free Wi Fi was fast and the air conditioning was quiet and kept the apartment cool. There is an iron and ironing board along with a hair dryer, it seems like they have forgotten nothing.

They say the average stay is 2 nights but I could have easily stayed here a week as it feels homely and has everything you need.

Everything smells and looks new and it feels so fresh. With the centre of York a 10 minute walk away it is ideal for a business, city or shopping break. A welcome addition to York, it will be a huge success and rightly so.
