10 In 10. Katie Mallinson, Managing Director At Huddersfield-Based Scriba PR
Paige Catton, Features Writer
Katie Mallinson
In this new and exclusive feature for The Yorkshire Times, we put a regional business professional in the hot seat and give them 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions. Here, we hear from Katie Mallinson, Managing Director at Huddersfield-based Scriba PR.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

A lot of talking and typing! As a PR firm we are responsible for telling clients’ stories, so it’s my job to help extract and articulate them. This then results in securing coverage opportunities that put them in the relevant spotlight for their business.

Most of the companies we work with are highly technical, so my working days typically involve a lot of caffeine as well!

What makes your company special?

We set out to help brands who believe their stories are too complex to tell. We often hear our clients say that they’re their sector’s ‘best-kept secret’, which is why we work with them to achieve the growth they are capable of.

We’re also a friendly and honest bunch – with smiles always on our faces – who believe in working hard and putting businesses first!

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Be honest and stand by the promises you make – clients will soon see through fake or empty gestures. Another one of my ‘rules’ is that I try to invest in our company sooner rather than I need to, so we’re geared up for growth when the time comes.

And finally, to push myself! I believe it is important to do things out of my comfort zone, so I’m progressing my own personal development – not just that of my colleagues!

Do you dress up or down for work?

I don’t own a suit, put it that way! Smart casual is my usual dress code, but I do have ‘posher’ outfits when they’re needed. We’re like chameleons, we adapt to our surroundings, which is why on a ‘heads-down’ day in the office – when I have tonnes of writing to do – you’ll find me in my Scriba hoody (as long as we have no visitors)!

What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

It would have to be to learn how to say no – I’m still working on this one!

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

We have quarterly away days, and our most recent was upstairs at the Northern Tea House in Huddersfield – I think it’s their amazing cake that keeps us going! I either look for unusual four walls or a cracking view – both provide great inspiration.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

I’d love to travel by train more if I could – it’s a great way to keep on top of my workload when I’m out of the office. The only downside is that you can’t sing your heart out to your favourite Spotify playlist…

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

I’m probably most relaxed when I’m eating a meal that someone else has cooked for me, so it would be in a restaurant! The Star at Harome is my favourite.

Otherwise, anywhere near water – I find it really tranquil. When we next take a trip out it’ll be with my little girl – she’s only five months old!

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

Oh – I should have read all of the questions first before giving my answers!

We’re spoilt for choice in Yorkshire, which is no doubt why I love food so much. I’m a big fan of The Olive Branch in Huddersfield at the moment – it’s only down the road and the crab starter is amazing!

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you are away?

Ok, it would probably be a bit much to say the food! So instead, I’ll say the view from my house – to the left you can see straight into the heart of the Huddersfield Valleys, and to the right the Pennines. You can’t help but switch off and get lost when you gaze at it.
