Album Review: Saun and Starr - Look Closer (Daptone Records)

I had never heard of this duo before I came across this album, but these New Yorkers have recorded an album that is soulful and sublime.

It could have been released anytime in the last 40 years as this is timeless soul taking its cue from Curtis Mayfield and a little of James Brown.

The title track, Look Closer opens the album, with its horn section that is reminiscent of Tom Jones and Its Not Unusual, the lyric is all about slowing down and taking time to see where you are in life. A great start to the album.

Hot Shot is a typical Curtis Mayfield track. You wonder if Jools Holland has heard of the act as they would be perfect for his show. Things would really take off in the UK then.

Dear Mt Teddy is built around a lazy groove whilst Blah Blah Blah closes this uplifting album. Worth checking out.

4 out of 5.
