Album Review: The James Hunter Six - Hold On!

Before I received this album I had never heard of James Hunter. It turns out he is an accomplished R&B singer from Colchester. He has been a backing singer on several Van Morrison tours. The album consists of timeless R&B tracks that recall Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

The opening track in the album If That Don't Tell You is representative of the album, it is the track Sam Cooke never recorded. Elsewhere stand out tracks include This Is Where We Come In, Something's Calling and Light of My Life.

He really needs to cross over to a wider audience, he would have been a good support act to have on the recent Caro Emerald tour as her fans would appreciate his brand of music. You could also imagine him performing on stage with Jools Holland and his big band especially singing the track Light of my Life.

The album could have been released anytime during the last 50 years and for me, was an unexpected surprise. In an age of over produced and manufactured pop stars this is a dose of music from the soul and roots of pure natural talent.

Worth seeking out.
