Buddy Holly - True Love Ways (Decca Records)

It seems to be a trend at the moment to set classic artist recordings against brand new orchestrations. Cilla Black has recently had this treatment which the Yorkshire Times reviewed.

Now it is the turn of Buddy Holly with this new album featuring his tracks in a new light with the songs given a new meaning with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Marking the 60th anniversary since his final recording session the album will be an essential buy if you are a Buddy Holly fan.

The album was recorded in London's Angel Studios and produced by Nick Patrick the man behind the successful Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison orchestral albums.

True Love Ways seems better in a classical setting whilst Everyday seems to shine anew with playful pizzicato strings and percussion.

Heartbeat, the last song recorded in his lifetime still has the rockabilly guitar but with the added strings it seems even brighter.

Elsewhere Oh Boy, Raining In My Heart and That'll Be The Day all benefit from the new arrangements.

It makes you wonder who they could feature next, perhaps the songs of Amy Winehouse could be a good contender?

This album would make a good Christmas present for any Buddy Holly fan.

I rate the album 4 out of 5.
