Business Profile: Paula Chamberlain, Managing Director - The Crescent
Paula Chamberlain
Paula Chamberlain is the founder and MD of Batley based Care firm, The Crescent. She has over 18 years’ experience in the care industry and over 10 years in the management of successful care services within both domiciliary care and residential care.

What is your business motto?

To always treat people with respect and honesty. And always say thank you, it goes a long way.

What makes your business different?

Our core service is providing domiciliary home care. But at The Crescent, we are also fully committed to doing the best for the community. We employ 40 staff in the business including Carers, Managers, Conference staff, Finance and Catering staff for both our conferencing and Cafe. The care that we provide is across all areas and we go above and beyond to provide space to help work with families who have carers in their own families – offering respite and a place to meet.

What do you always have with you?

My phone… I am sure 99% of people have the same answer!

Do you dress-up or dress-down for business?

I always dress to impress. First impressions count!

Which person has inspired you most in your business life and in what way?

I’ve never had an official mentor. I have been inspired by various people throughout my life,,. but I’d have to say that the strength of character of my parents has driven me to succeed and keep going no matter what. Seeing clients who would have struggled with everyday tasks also inspires me to keep going and reassures me that my role really is making a difference to people’s lives.

What's your proudest achievement in business?

Still being in business nearly 7 years down the line. I feel like I have come a long way and helped to inspire a huge number of people along my journey.

What's your company's greatest asset?

Me and my team, I don’t have a business without my fantastic, hard working, dedicated team. I like to think that my passion for care and looking after people is infectious. My team bring smiles to the faces of anyone they meet!

Do you use social media and if so with how much success?

Yes, it’s our best platform to get in touch with the local community and it is part of our strategy to use it more, going forward. It is amazing to see how communities can be built and support can be given, online as well as offline.

If you hadn't gone down your chosen career path, what would you be doing?

I believe my purpose in life is to serve, which is what set me off on my care career path. But if I wasn’t doing this, I would be in the army, as I am quick-thinking and extremely loyal. Or failing that I would have loved to be a singer, I love entertaining people!

Give us one tip for a successful business

People will often try to dampen your sparkle, but it’s important to always be true to yourself and know that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.

How do you relax away from work?

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family and going to the caravan to relax. I have signed up to do a 300-mile bike ride in August from Old Trafford to Wembley to support the Rugby League Cares charity. I really want to get in shape before I turn 40 this year and raise some funds for a great cause. So, I am starting to train for that with the help of Batley Bulldogs soon and hoping that my fitness levels improve enough to see me through it!
