Christmas Kissing Tree Is Launched With A Kiss... And A Surprise Proposal
'Kiss-mas' came to Leeds on Saturday with the official switch-on of the Trinity Leeds shopping centre Christmas lights and the unveiling of the UK's only Christmas Kissing Tree.
Around 20,000 people watched as the tree was switched on with a kiss... and then a proposal.
The unique, 66-foot high Christmas tree, which contains 25,000 lights, illuminates when two people kiss beneath it - their lips complete a circuit which activates the entire display.
Andy Wormald, 29, and partner Lauren Berg, 25, from Pudsey won a competition among more than 1,200 entrants to be the first couple to kiss underneath the tree.
But that was not all as Andy dropped to one knee and, in front of 20,000 people, proposed to his girlfriend... she said 'yes'.
Dan Wharton, Marketing Manager at Trinity Leeds, said:
"This was our biggest, brightest and best Christmas lights switch-on yet. More than 20,000 people attended and many were puckering-up to illuminate our tree.
"We are delighted for Andy and Lauren and wish them all the very best with their wedding. We hope the £1,000 prize gift card makes theirs an even more special Christmas this year."
Following the switch-on, members of the public can now take a kiss underneath the tree and illuminate the lights themselves.
