Harrogate salon supports Dementia Forward with fundraising head shave by Emmerdale star

John Middleton and Andrea Bradley
Harrogate hair salon Dangerfield & Keane is supporting the fundraising efforts of Yorkshire woman Andrea Bradley who had her hair shaved by former Emmerdale actor John Middleton to raise funds and awareness for the local Dementia Forward charity which helped her and her mother.

Andrea, who now lives in Easingwold, attended the Coldbath Road salon last Monday (20th November) for an unusual appointment – long-time customer of Dangerfield and Keane, John Middleton (otherwise known as Ashley in Emmerdale) wielded the razor to shave off her blonde locks.

John hit the headlines earlier this year with his moving portrayal of a man living with, and eventually passing away, as a result of dementia.

Andrea embarked on her mission with the aim of raising £500 for the charity which supported her as she cared for her mother, Elaine Scaife of Keighley, who suffered from Vascular Dementia for around four years and died in 2014.

Andrea has already beaten her fundraising target with £870 donated so far and more donations still being made!

“My Mum lived with dementia for too long. She needed love, support and care as her health deteriorated. I was her main carer and with the help of Dementia Forward, we managed to make her final days as comfortable as possible despite the great torment she experienced,” explains Andrea.

“They were with me through so many episodes that my Mum went through in a way which not only helped my Mum, but also helped me to cope - I really could not have managed without their help.

“It is now my turn to help Dementia Forward and do what little I can to give something back. I already volunteer a small part of my time helping in one of their wellbeing cafes - something which gives me so much pleasure.

"I am now trying to raise funds and awareness to help their excellent work by having my head shaved. I’d like to thank everyone who’s supporting me, my family and friends, Dangerfield and Keane and, of course, John Middleton, for doing the deed!”

Well-known local stylist Gerri Keane, adds: “Dementia Forward is a fantastic charity, the salon funds its Time Together Tuesday singing therapy weekly session at Christ Church, so we were happy to support Andrea in her brave fundraising feat!”
