Five Guys - Bradford

The traditional hamburger market seems to have matured in the UK as the upmarket Bryons opened in Harrogate recently and now the American chain Five Guys has opened in Harrogate and Bradford.

The Bradford restaurant was quite busy when I visited on a Sunday evening. What you notice first of all is that the restaurant is spotlessly clean and all the staff working there seem happy and pleased to serve you.

It is only burgers and hot dogs on the menu along with a few sandwiches such as a Veggie sandwich, cheese sandwiches and the ubiquitous BLT.

All the burgers are 100% fresh beef, no fillers or preservatives, with everything being cooked fresh having been prepared from scratch in the morning. I chose the Bacon Double cheeseburger which was succulent, tasty and very filling. It may be a bit more to pay than your usual hamburger but the difference is definitely in the taste.

25kg bags of potatoes are laid on wooden pallets by the main counter and on the wall it tells you where the potatoes have come from, (mine came from Whams Farm in Lancashire). The chips it has to be said are very 'moreish' and nothing like you have tasted before. I would just go back to eat the chips!

It is self service and your order number is called out for you to collect when ready. Drinks are from a dispenser and for one price you can refill your soft drink as often as you like. Plastic knives and forks are provided.

The Five Guys seems to be popular with the age 25 upwards market who have grown up out of the typical hamburger chain.

I do think they are missing out on local business by not offering Halal meat for the hamburgers, but apparently at the moment they cannot source consistently the high quality Halal meat they would require.

A novel idea are the monkey nuts which are on offer for you load up in a small tray and at no charge.

A big difference too is that the restaurant is warm and you do not have to sit there with your coat on like you do in some hamburger chains.

A welcome addition to the Bradford restaurant market.
