Hilton Garden Inn, Manchester Emirates Old Trafford
Graham Clark, Features Writer
A trend that seems to be happening recently is the building of new hotels on the sites of some of the North's prestigious sporting venues.
Opened last September, the new Hilton Garden Inn is on the same site as Lancashire Cricket Ground at Old Trafford in Manchester. 85 of the rooms actually face the pitch and if you get a room on one of the upper floors you can also see the Pennines.
The hotel still smells new and the first impression of our King Deluxe Room with pitch view was that is was a comfortable large sized room, clean cut and stylish, not cluttered and with good views of the pitch.
The bed was quite hard but provided a good night's sleep. The complimentary Wi Fi was fast, the 40 inch TV had enough channels to keep you entertained, whilst the work desk and ergonomic chair was handy for doing any business.

The free safe was big enough to put your laptop in, the hair dryer looked like it had never been used whilst the wardrobe had lots of hanging space. The coffee/tea making facilities were handy too. Air conditioning worked well and was not noisy.
I thought that the bathroom might have had a rain shower, however, the shower was powerful enough. Good quality towels.
It was good to see photos in the restaurant of cricket legends and of the concerts that have been held at the cricket ground, such as Beyoncé and the concert last June for the victims of the Manchester Arena atrocity.
The Garden Grille restaurant looked welcoming - the international staff they have working there gave it a cosmopolitan feel. I liked the large tables and friendly service.
It is not too extensive a menu but with burgers, steaks, pasta, fish and chips and pizza there is something for all tastes. My starter of Chicken Meatballs was tasty and succulent whilst my partner's Tortellini was said to be delicious.
My burger with Monterey Jack Cheese and Bacon was nicely presented with what I call proper chips, whilst my partner's Rump Steak was large enough for two to share.
Desserts of Tiffin cake and a very large vanilla ice cream sundae rounded off a good dining experience.
Breakfast is taken in the same restaurant, buffet style with a huge range of food - the hot food was always topped up. The porridge was wholesome and not soggy whilst the waffle maker seemed to be very popular. Good to see fried eggs being cooked to order and brought to the table.
With free parking for hotel guests, friendly northern hospitality and a short 5 minute walk from the Old Trafford football ground and a Metrolink train station just by the hotel, it looks like they have a winning formula here.
It's a hotel you would choose to return to.
