Hotel Indigo, Newcastle

Hotel Indigo, Newcastle
The Indigo in central Newcastle is the city's newest 4 star boutique hotel. Situated in Grainger Town the 148 rooms are on four floors and range from King Executive Room to Superior room with balcony.

If you are coming by car there is a car park on site with a £12 daily charge.

The central railway station is a 5 minute walk away.

Check in was fast and courteous. The hotel does seem to have a buzz about it when entering the reception area.

King Executive Room

The King Executive Room was clean and comfortable and the colour scheme of black and dark yellow made for a warm feel to the room.

Behind the bed the wallpaper had rows of large columns on it which made the room appear bigger than it was. The hotel says that the columns can be seen in the nearby neighbourhood. I thought that they reminded me of the Penshaw monument!

Good to see a complimentary fridge with 2 soft drinks, 2 waters: one still, one sparkling, a chocolate bar and a packet of crisps. Tea and coffee making facilities were an added bonus as was the free safe.

The hotel have thought of the business traveller with the desk and chair and the various sockets for your computer or tablet.

The bathroom was spacious with a rain shower, although the pressure could have been a bit higher; there was a range of good toiletries. You can even listen to the TV in the bathroom through the speaker in the bathroom ceiling.

The air conditioning kept the room warm and the lighting was more than adequate.

There is a small fitness room on site too.

Meals are taken in the ground floor Marco Pierre White Steakhouse restaurant, the only one in the North East. It seems to be very popular with the locals too.

They have a wide range of steaks. Our sirloin steaks were cooked to our preference with homemade pomme frites.

The best part of the meal was the desserts. My Classic Knickerbocker Glory was worth going back to the restaurant alone, whilst my partner's New York Baked Cheesecake was deep and filling. Service was friendly and first class. A good wine list complimented the menu.

Breakfast is buffet style, but either because it was a weekend and busy or some of the staff were new, it did not flow as freely as the evening meal. Orders taken for tea or coffee seemed to get mixed up.

A lot of hotels do seem to think most guests want toast bringing to the table within 5 minutes of sitting down, whereas I am not alone in wanting it served fresh and warm later on in the meal. The request for the toast to be delivered later (not just at the Indigo), did seem to get forgotten.

The other hot items were freshly cooked and there was a good continental section too.

A good quality hotel that is near to the shopping area and a 10 minute walk from St James Park for any football fan. The hotel seems to attract a wide age group and everyone I spoke to seemed to have had a good stay.
