Improved Road Surface Along The A1 Near Wakefield
Highways England is making journeys better and safer for drivers in Wakefield as part of a £1.65 million road surfacing scheme.

Improvements are being carried out on just over a 5-mile stretch of the southbound carriageway on the A1 between Ferrybridge and Barnsdale Bar, providing a smoother road surface for drivers.

Contractors will be laying over 10,000 tonnes of surfacing material as part of the scheme which will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am during the week and between 9pm and 10am on weekends, starting on Tuesday 21 March.

Approximately a mile of lane 1 at Darrington will need to remain closed during the day on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March to allow deeper layers of resurfacing material to cool before the lane can be reopened to traffic.

Highways England project manager Martin Barnes said:

"This project will provide drivers with smoother and safer journeys along this stretch of the A1 between Ferrybridge and Barnsdale Bar.

"Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic is kept to a minimum. We are carrying out this work overnight while traffic levels are at their lowest."

In order to carry out the work access to the A1 will be restricted on the following side roads will be affected: West Park Drive, Jackson's Lane, Middlefield Lane and Crab Tree Lane. Residents requiring access will be escorted through the closure.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place. The work is expected to be completed within 2 weeks, depending on reasonable weather conditions.
