Ingleborough In Wool
Sonny, Molly, Alexis and Delilah with their felt creation
Children from Clapham CofE Primary School have been exploring the heritage and beauty of their local area through the medium of wool.

Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust's Education Officer Anthea Hanson worked with the children on a giant felting project, mainly using wool from Swaledale sheep.

Anthea said:
"It was a pleasure to work with the youngsters on this project. The end result is a delightful large felt montage of their interpretation of the Ingleborough area. It looks fantastic, and the children learnt lots about the local landscape, sheep farming and the traditional art of felting along the way."

The children aged 4-11 enjoyed the hands-on activity. After feeling the texture of the washed and processed wool, and comparing it with harsher types of wool, the children learnt how to manipulate the fibres using wet felting techniques to create their artwork.

They finished off the piece by using sewing threads to make certain features stand out. The finished hanging will be displayed in the school.

This activity was part of the Schools Out project which aims to deliver curriculum-linked outdoor activity and engagement days for primary schools.

It's part of Stories in Stone, a four-year programme of community and heritage projects developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership, which is led by YDMT.
