Jurys Inn, Refurbished Hotel, Sheffield

It is always pleasing to see some investment in Yorkshire. The Sheffield hotel of the Jurys Inn chain have recently spent £2.6 million refurbishing the hotel giving a modern look to all the bedrooms and public areas.

The reception is big and so was the welcome though the "Nice to see you" in neon letters behind the reception desk made me think of Bruce Forsyth with his famous catchphrase. I resisted the temptation to say "to see you Nice" to the receptionist!

Room 911 on the ninth floor might not have been the best choice for the superstitious but our room was indeed bright and refurbished in modern colours. It was a standard room although I would have expected a fridge which seemed an anomaly. The lighting in the room was good as was the comfy beds with quality bed linen. They say that the DREAM beds are exclusive to Jurys Inn and they were a big plus. Good heating too.

I liked the framed drawings of Sheffield which gave a local touch.

There were plenty of plug in points and USB ports. The huge flat screen TV came with all the usual channels. Excellent free Wi Fi too. The refurbishment seems not to have reached the bathroom though, however it was perfectly adequate, though no plug in point for an electric shaver. Quite a few hotels seem to think everyone gets a wet shave these days. You can get an adapter from downstairs in reception though it will cost you £4.00 to buy one.

I would suggest though that you need to be careful where your room is situated in the hotel as opposite the hotel is a music venue that when we stayed on a Friday night had music playing until 3am. Even with the double glazing closed we could still hear the bass. I might attend over 75 music concerts a year and I love music but not when I'm trying to get a good night's sleep!

Other guests who were staying at the back of the hotel I spoke to were away from the noise and were more fortunate than we were. The hotel might not be able to control the noise from the club but you might be able to choose where your room is located upon check in.

I ordered two newspapers to be delivered to our room but these never arrived, on enquiring at reception the morning after it appeared that my request had never been actioned.

The breakfast is buffet style with hot and cold options. The quality of the food was excellent, the food was hot, copious and items constantly replenished when they ran out. The staff in the restaurant were pleasant and very helpful.

If you have eaten too much breakfast there is the Cardio Gym to work off those extra calories.

There are paying car parks all around the hotel, the train station is a 10 minute walk away and the shopping areas are nearby too.
