Letter To The Editor: Try Sailing At Ripon On Saturday 12 May
Dear Editor

We are inviting prospective members to come and visit us on Saturday 12 May 10:30am - 4pm.

Ripon Sailing Club is situated on Farnham Lake, on the outskirts of Knaresborough and we have been a family friendly club for 60 years. We offer memberships to families, single people and junior members and have a packed calendar of competitive and social sailing as well as running a comprehensive learn to sail scheme for members via our training school which is registered with the sport's governing body, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

We have a vibrant and active membership with over 300 memberships and over 650 members, spanning the generations. We run racing and training events each weekend and some mid-week events. Members also participate in local, national and international competitive events. If racing isn’t your thing, the club is open for cruising all year and many members enjoy the relaxing environment and fantastic facilities in their leisure time.

Sailing is an amazing family sport, that can be enjoyed by all generations. Unlike many sports, families can participate in the same competition by sailing together or against each other and the camaraderie and friendships that establish through sailing support many of our juniors while they go through the education system by providing a social and sporting outlet away from the social and academic demands they often find in the school environment. Sailing also offers insights to, and supports, many areas of the national curriculum. At a time where mental health is so much in the news, sailing also offers many opportunities for stress relief and helps to address the balance the demands modern life place on us all.

I will be grateful if you could include the details in your what’s on section, or perhaps run an article for the paper or website edition? I attach additional editorial comment for you to use, alternatively please get in touch and I’ll happily provide additional interview information. I attach a pdf and png flyer and a link to our club’s facebook event is below.

Our open day is designed to attract new members, and there will be club members present on the day to help answer any questions, take prospective members out for a taster sail or a ride in our safety boats. Our professional catering team will also be providing lunches, lots of cake and drinks all day. Our club is run by members for members and consequently it is a lovely, friendly and relaxing place to spend time.

The open day is on Saturday 12 May, 10:30am - 4pm. Our address is Ripon Sailing Club, The Clubhouse, Farnham Lane, Knaresborough. HG5 9JS. Our entrance is on Farnham Lane which is just off the A6055 Boroughbridge Road, our gate is immediately to the right of the Treves Factory, banners will be out on the day.

Fiona Spence.
