Love Your Local Market 17th - 31st May 2018
Now in its 7th year, the annual ‘Love Your Local Market’ initiative grew out of the Mary Portas review in 2012 as a one day event. Today the campaign has grown to become a global campaign with over 3000 events taking place in 17 countries in 2018.
Now Shambles Market, York is set to join this national event, celebrating all of the city’s independent market traders – which now stands at over seventy unique businesses, selling local or hand-made produce.
Shambles Market will host a variety of events and activities across the fortnight starting with the launch on 17th May hosted by Minster FM Breakfast host Ben Fry and Sally Greenaway Head of Visit York, alongside some of York’s local musicians. There promises to be something for everyone over the upcoming weeks with new trader days, youth enterprise hubs, makers markets and a Family Fun Day – all free of charge.
Nabma’s Love Your Local Market is the UK's largest annual celebration of retail and wholesale markets in our towns and cities. Across Britain 3,000 events will showcase innovation, celebrating heritage, culture, produce, crafts and food. Love Your Local Market is a chance for residents and visitors to meet local traders and gain a real insight into the stories behind these independent businesses.

Chris Price Head of City Centre and Markets said: “We are proud to be a part of this year’s Love Your Local Market and are delighted to see support for Shambles Market has grown year on year. New additions like the al fresco Food Court have been especially popular. Shambles Market, as with many markets is at the centre of the community in York, and our traders work extremely hard to ensure it’s a fantastic place to trade at and visit all year round.”
