Malina Moye - Bad As I Wanna Be

Malina Moye may be a name you don't know currently, but she is definitely one that is worth paying attention to.

The left-handed guitarist debuted in 2011 with the album Diamonds and Guitars, garnering early comparisons to Madonna for her driven approach to self-publicity. However, as one of Guitar World's Top 10 Female Guitarists, she has apparently modelled herself more on Jimi Hendrix and Prince than one of the world's finest pop chameleons.

With her sophomore album (2014 saw the release of the EP Rock-N-Roll Baby), can she finally earn herself a substantial place on the musical map?

Although she may have hoped for comparisons to some of the more innovative guitar driven rock stars, the truth of the matter is that Bad As I Wanna Be is somewhere between Beyonce and Peppercorn, with the vocals of J-Lo thrown in.

However, this is no bad thing. Malina Moye may not be rocks latest icon but the pop world will certainly appreciate her arrival. While Bad As I Wanna Be proves her to actually be a rather tame bad girl - think early Pink! attitude with a little Mya sass, her 10 track release is an enjoyably radio friendly affair from start to finish.

While track 6, A Little Rough, actually offers the album's only impressive guitar flair, Moye and her team may need to rethink their marketing approach to embrace the truth of her artistic identity to really reach her actual audience. But with an impressive vocal and well produced set of songs, it is only a matter of time before fans of late nineties and early noughties R'n'B tinged pop are singing along at her concerts.
