National Insect Week and Wildlife Day In York
Spider hunt at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens
Yorkshire’s top wildlife charities and experts celebrate British wildlife in our gardens at an event near York for National Inspect Week (18-24 June).

Pond-dipping, bee walks, moth-trapping, bird-ringing, owl pellet dissection and finding spiders with the help of an electric toothbrush are just some of the activities on offer at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens seventh wildlife day which is on Sunday 24 June.

Experts share knowledge of birds found in gardens
Yorkshire’s top wildlife charities and experts are joining organiser Vanessa Cook in her four acre garden. Now in her 70s, Vanessa has made her family home a haven for wildlife over the last 40 years. She hopes the event will enthuse people about wildlife in their gardens and encourage us all to share even the smallest of spaces with animals, birds and insects.

Those involved in this celebration of British wildlife are the: Bumblebee Conservation Trust; Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire, East Yorkshire Bat Group, Hawk and Owl Trust,Natural England, North Yorkshire Rotters, PLACE (People, Landscape And Cultural Environment) of Yorkshire, Tansy Beetle Action Group, Yorkshire Amphibian & Reptile Group and Yorkshire Mammal Group.

Inspired to be organic by Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’, Vanessa’s horticultural credentials include studies at Askham Bryan College (York), a past holder of the national Pulmonaria collection, a recognised expert grower of geraniums, a lecturer and garden writer.

Stillingfleet is one of 170 gardens in the UK and overseas to be selected by the Royal Horticultural Society as a ‘partner garden’ because of its exceptionally high standards of planting and design.

Wildlife day
Stillingfleet Gardens and Nurseries is a late 18th Century farmhouse surrounded by a series of quintessentially English, wildlife friendly gardens including a meadow and pond.

The garden, plant nursery and café are open on set days between April and September. A programme of workshops begins in February, with apple pruning, and ends in September with a day with Noel Kingsbury, a British garden designer and writer on gardening and plant sciences, in partnership with Gardens Illustrated.
