Retro Cool And Vintage Seaside
Victoria Benn, Features Writer
I don't often think about what an archetypal northern social club might look like, but if someone were to ask me now, I would now know the answer; the Caroline Social Club in Saltaire.
The club is so named because of its location on Caroline Street.
It is an unprepossessing building from the outside; with a mixture of wood cladding, pebble dashing and stained concrete walls - yet inside it retains all the retro charm of its mid-century origins, with pine clad walls, a warm intimate feeling and a very cool orange and yellow hued stage area.
A venue in fact perfect for the Saltaire Record and Retro Fair which was held there on Saturday.
Quite aptly, the bar was open all day and the Record Club were flipping the vinyl on traditional turntables. Not surprisingly there were crates and crates of vinyl on sale, as well as pop culture ephemera, quirky collectables and hand-printed lino cut rock'n'roll prints and greeting cards courtesy of Stoker Art.
An intimate, friendly and enjoyable experience - and all for the retrospective price of 50p!
Possibly one of the most iconic vintage images the UK wide has to be a Bamforth's seaside postcard, which many readers will have grown up with, and which conjure up images of saucy jokes, sun burn, buckets and spades, sticks of rock and fish and chips...
With that in mind, what better place to host a vintage fair than at the seaside?
The Yorkshire coast boasts many classic seaside resorts, one of the best of which is Whitby. On July 22 and 23 Whitby will play host to The Great Seaside Vintage Fair.
The Whitby Pavilion is a venue like no other, perched above the beach on the West Cliff, with massive port-hole windows looking out to sea - a unique and unbridled view on any day, but a wonderful treat for a vintage fair.
Stallholders will be travelling from as far afield as Edinburgh bringing the very best of true vintage.
