Steps - Leeds Arena

A lot has happened in the 20 years since Steps first got together, for instance the Leeds Arena was built which is now firmly established on the touring circuit.

Cheesier than a big slice of mature cheddar, Steps are as popular as ever judging by the sell out performance at the arena. They still dance, albeit slower than back in the day, now they have over 10 younger dancers on stage with them.

It was a polished well timed show with plenty of costume changes and totally fun. Slick, glamorous and it reminded you of what the UK Singles chart is missing right now: bright, bubbly and memorable songs that will still be remembered in 20 years time.

What looks like a troupe on their way to a Venetian ball come through the audience and from the back of the stage, with their Venetian masks on it was not long before the identity of 5 of them were revealed to be none other than Steps.

Scarred of The Dark, the first single off the new album starts off the highly entertaining gig. The Diana Ross cover of Chain Reaction sees them playing Doctors and Nurses whilst the stage is turned into a disco for Stomp.

The dancers wear mirror balls on their heads, it looks spectacular if you hadn't seen the Pet Shop Boys use the same idea on their last arena tour.

Their debut single 5678, released 20 years ago the week of this gig is turned into a hoe down with the 5 members of the group in country and western costumes.

Things slow down for Its The Way You Make Me Feel when a guitarist turns up to accompany the 5 piece on a night that had been reliant on a booming backing track.

Summer of Love cleverly mixes in the hit of the summer, Despacito before the stage is turned blue as they sing Neon Blue. Like most of the songs tonight, it relies heavily on the back catalogue of Abba.

As the high octane gig moves up a gear it was time to remember the hand movements to One For Sorrow, the track is probably one of their best, with confetti cannons showering the audience with Love hearts it ended nearly two hours of sugary pop music.

As the stage is turned into a wedding cake with Steps now all dressed for the occasion it was time for Tragedy and yet more dance routines that you will also associate with the song.

After their second reunion in 16 years it looks like this time they are not going to go away. It was hard not to be swept away with the enthusiasm coming from the stage as well as the audience.
