The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio: Reincarnation Of An Icon

Since entering the UK market in late 2016, the Giulia has done much to dispel many of the negative myths that have dogged Alfa Romeo for far too long and in doing so has also raised the profile of the marque. Even those sections of the motoring press which traditionally show a bias towards German cars have had to accept that in the Giulia there is a serious rival to the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
The Giulia takes its name from its iconic predecessor of the ‘60s which was in the vanguard of lightweight saloon cars graced with a powerful engine to provide quick acceleration, lively handling and that altogether sporty feel.
Some eighteen months on from the new Giulia’s launch and already with a number of awards under its belt, we test drove the top of the range Giulia Quadrifoglio (or Four Leaf Cloverleaf in English parlance).
To begin with, and in keeping with every car that emerges from the Alfa stable, the Quadrifoglio possesses seductive good looks where every curve and every angle blend harmoniously into a ravishing work of art. It may be a four door saloon but it oozes the sleek lines and finesse of a thoroughbred sports car.
Inside the cabin the refined good looks continue. The dash is well laid out and all the controls and switches for the plethora of bells and whistles packed on board the Quadrifoglio, are readily accessible, albeit one or two a tad fiddly. The infotainment system could be a little more intuitive in its operation though, particularly when using the satnav.
The quality of the interior fixtures and fittings is impressive. Everything feels solid and well put together. No cheap plastics and hence no rattles or squeaks.
The front seats, nestling between the high centre console, are exceptionally well sculpted and comfortable. Headroom and leg room, even for taller occupants, are more than ample and there is plenty of range within the individual seat adjustment. Once behind the wheel you feel embraced by the car and actually a part of it.
The rear seats are equally comfortable with plenty of legroom and the boot provides more than adequate luggage space.
And then of course there’s the engine! The 2.9 V6 petrol power plant is a magnificent beast by any standards. The 503 turbo charged horses raring to go under the bonnet will gallop happily from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 191 mph. The throttle is highly responsive and the smooth acceleration is perfectly complimented by the 8 speed automatic gearbox. If required the auto can be overridden manually using the paddles either side of the steering wheel.
As with all current models, the Giulia Quadrifoglio comes with Alfa’s distinctive DNA driving options for dynamic, natural and all-weather mode but with the addition of a Race option. Whilst the latter boosts performance to adrenalin junkie levels and generates a terrific roar from the twin exhausts, it is perhaps a bit of a boy racer’s ‘toy’ or best kept for track days.
Considering the amount of raw power at one’s disposal, the Quadrifoglio’s handling is superb, aided not least by the fact that the suspension configuration can be adjusted as desired. It grips the road like a veritable limpet and the steering is responsive and precise. It takes corners with ease even at speed and the ceramic carbon brakes feel both smooth and reassuring.
Whilst it is not the cheapest car to buy at about £59k nor to run (official fuel consumption is around 34mpg although on our test it came in at 26.3mpg) and is not the greenest, with a CO2 emission of 189, the Alfa Quadrifoglio is a truly beautiful car and enormous fun to drive.
