The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Platters And Freda Payne - Leeds Arena

Freda Payne
Freda Payne
With these sorts of tours you never know if the reputations of the acts performing will be tarnished if they are not as good as you remember them but after witnessing tonight's show their reputations remain intact.

First up on stage is Freda Payne, looking stylish in a silver dress she still has a strong voice: How Sweet Is Your Love sounded brilliant whilst she slips in a new track that suggests her style these days is more jazz diva as opposed to soul sister. Of course it was her worldwide hit Band of Gold that she is best known for which still sounded just as good as it did back in the day.

The Platters were another act whose vocals were spot on: slick, polished and professional they were one of the highlights of the night. Their act obviously includes their hits such as Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Only You but who would have expected them to sing One Direction's hit What Makes You Beautiful?which they do along with The Pointer Sisters hit I'm so Excited. The group might not have any of the original members but they were just as good as the original band.

The Four Tops alternate each night headlining with The Temptations, tonight it was The Four Tops who played second to the top of the bill. Some of the old tracks were given a 21st century makeover by the solid R&B band. Some which worked well in the new format whilst others seemed dis-jointed. Of course the big hits like Standing in the Shadows of Love and Reach Out I'll Be There sounded fine.

The Temptations had the dance moves that the other acts lacked; dressed in red blazers and black trousers they delivered the hits such as Ball of Confusion, Get Ready and Cloud Nine with style with perfect vocal harmonies. Their keyboard player who doubles as the backing band's conductor was nearly as entertaining to watch as the band. We could forgive The Temptations the cheesy in-between song chat when they have hits as strong as this.

A soulful night that had its highs and lows but no one seemed to go away disappointed.
