The Yorkshire Times Seasonal Spotlight - Andy McCaul of The Bigger Boat
Katie Mallinson, Features Writer
We grab 60 seconds with Andy McCaul, managing director at The Bigger Boat, in this exclusive seasonal spotlight for The Yorkshire Times…
What was your primary business objective at the start of the year?
We had a few – to achieve our gross profit target, further develop the team and continue to deliver great results for our clients.
Looking back on 2017, what have been the 3 biggest highlights for The Bigger Boat?
Completing the Goldman Sachs 10,000 small businesses programme, growing 40% (on 2016) and maintaining our 100% client retention rate.
What has been the most difficult challenge for your business?
Balancing our growth – with the addition of new team members and services – at the same time as having the chance to work on the business itself.
Name another Yorkshire firm that you think has had a great year…
Luxury door manufacturer Deuren, who provided us with our amazing internal meeting room door – they’ve expanded, bought new machinery, and had a really great 2017.
And one to watch in 2018?
Not Yorkshire-based, but it has to be Bitcoin! There’s a few crypto currency addicts in the office and it’s seen some huge gains in the last month – I’m interested to see whether it will it keep it up in 2018 or tail off.

There will be an increased gross profit target put in place, on the basis of our current growth plan. To ensure that we meet that, we will be working hard to increase both client and staff numbers throughout 2018.
Anything you will do differently?
There’s never a shortage of ideas in the office, but this year has seen the biggest change internally as a result of the Goldman Sachs programme. There is a raft of things we’re going to be doing differently next year, from process improvement, to altering the services on offer – and even a new website!
How do you think the regional business climate will fare?
I’m confident that the solid business people of Yorkshire will continue to pull success out of the bag, as always!
How will your team be celebrating Christmas before the break?
We’re participating in the Crystal Maze experience over in Manchester – which will obviously be followed by a few too many drinks afterwards!
Describe Christmas at your house, in three words
Very excited kids!
