V Festival, Weston Park - Day One

General view of the V Festival
General view of the V Festival
As seems to be customary with R&B artists, Jason Derulo arrived late on stage, I didn't realise how many hits he has but after seeing him live his gig at Leeds Arena next March will be a show not to miss.

With his 4 dancers and tight band it could have been one of the best performances of the festival.

Jason Derulo
Jason Derulo
The last time he appeared at the V Festival it was in one of the tents. It was so popular that they had to restrict entry. No wonder he drew a large audience today when appearing on the main stage.

Riding Solo, In My Head and Talk Dirty To Me (in which he takes off his shirt) all sounded like pop classics. His MC announces on Derulo's departure from the stage that we have just seen "the new king of pop". On this showing he was not far off the mark.

Emeli Sande
Emeli Sande
Emeli Sande understandably drew an older audience to witness her show. Free from her usual piano she was able to move around the stage.

Another artist who is coming to the Leeds Arena in October she gave a polished and precise performance. It Hurts and My Kinda Love even sound better when the sun shines. Her track she recorded with Labrinth, Underneath Your Beautiful drew one of the biggest response to her set.

Stormzy

Man of the moment, Stormzy seemed surprised to be so high on up the bill, but with confidence and some street wise moves, the Grime star pulled it off. He even dropped in his own version of Ed Sheeran's Shape of You.

Ellie Goulding

With no new material to push Ellie Goulding kicked off her set with Aftertaste, a track off her last album.

It was beginning to look like she was going to play the same set as on her last UK tour and not adapt it to a festival audience, until she sings Outside, the track she recorded with Calvin Harris, then things really start to heat up.

The hits continue with Anything Can Happen and Burn, but it was her soundtrack song to the Fifty Shades of Grey film, Love Me Like You Do that seemed to be the one that everyone knew.

With fireworks, flame throwers, smoke and even bubbles she approached the night with a determination that paid off.

Jay Z
Jay Z
When Jay Z was announced as the headliner of the first night many eyebrows were raised, but with his huge inflatable balloon dog as an enormous prop he drew a large crowd.

Public Service Announcement and New York State of Mind were highlights of his commanding set.

Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra
Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra
Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra on the MTV stage took the older and quite a few younger clubbers back to the times when his Friday night show on Radio 1 really was essential listening.

Who would have thought that over 20 years on the likes of tracks such as Inner City's Good Life, Robert Miles and Children along with You Got the Love by The Source would be performed by an orchestra.

With Tong at the rear of the stage behind his decks he looked like the curator presiding over it all.
