Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on 22 April every year.

Events are held around the world to protect the environment. We should all think about the planet and how we can save the world we live in.

Over a billion people every year show their support and take part in events to highlight issues related to climate change, global warming and to protect the environment.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a day set aside to encourage people to be more environmentally friendly.

The founder of Earth Day was Senator Gaylord Nelson (1916-2005) an American politician from Wisconsin, who launched a new wave of environmental activism, after witnessing the extensive damage of the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969.

The first Earth Day event was held in 1970 in America and is now observed in 192 countries.

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day.

Why look after the planet?

Earth is a truly wonderful place known as the Blue Planet because of its abundance of water.

Finally we are now beginning to understand the consequences of our actions, the impact they have on our world and the survival of species.

We need to take steps to repair the damage to our world before it is too late. Everywhere nature is under assault. Let us take control so there is a world to pass on to our children and for them to pass on to their children.

What can we do?

Plant a tree or some wild flowers
Grow your own food or buy locally produced food
Reduce waste, reuse and recycle
Conserve water
Support climate change
Walk or cycle more
Go paperless
Go meat or dairy-free once a week
