York City FA Trophy Final Win
Thomas Feaheny, Boxing Correspondent
York City put relegation from the National League behind them as they won the 2017 FA Trophy after beating Macclesfield Town 3-2, thanks to a late Aidan Connolly strike.

This final certainly had a lot on the line with the Minstermen boss Gary Mills saying he was treating it as the first game of the 2017/18 season, while Macclesfield boss John Askey was looking at plans he was to make to his squad going into the summer.

Despite being relegated York had won both games against Macclesfield and they took the lead with eight minutes gone as Jon Parkin got his 20th of the season and 16th for City with a flick header.

This pulsating game saw Macclesfield level soon after when Reece Browne being thread through and firing into the net with just 12 minutes gone.

This game showed no sign of slowing down when Sean Newton picked out Vadaine Oliver and the forward had a simple tap-in.

The Silkmen had two good chances soon after falling behind first Danny Whitaker forced Kyle Letheren to tip one over. This was followed by a good run by Browne who worked his way past 4 York players but blazed wide.

Town though would draw level with Ollie Norburn scoring a sublime goal from 25 yards out his powerful drive flew into the net and meant the scores were level 2-2 at the break.

The second half was a much more cagey affair but Macclesfield thought they had taken the lead on 67 minutes when Hamza Bencherif somehow headed Kinglsley James's volley over from his own bar.

York though in the 86th minute won it when a Jon Parkin shot looked set to go in but from a yard out Aidan Connolly tapped it in and ensured the Minstermen gained victory at Wembley again.

Gary Mills will be hoping this can provide the momentum needed as they look to gain promotion next season.
