citizenM Hotel, Tower Bridge, London
Graham Clark, Features Writer
citizenM - Tower Bridge
citizenM is a new breed of hotels that originate from Holland. In the UK there are 3 hotels in London and one in Glasgow.

The hotel says that they cater for the modern traveller who values luxurious, contemporary design. The service will be friendly and the hotels will be centrally located.

The Tower Bridge hotel is opposite the Tower of London and is just by Tower Bridge underground station.

You check yourself in by the computer terminals that are in the lobby area. If you have problems the friendly, international staff are there to help you, or should I say 'ambassadors' as the hotel likes to call them. You simply put in your reservation number and then confirm your details and a room card is issued. It might all seem a bit impersonal but it is fast and in my experience, trouble free.

Lobby area
The lobby resembles a living room with comfy chairs and settees, book cases and free iMacs to use. There is also a bar area too that seemed very popular.

It is the rooms though that are different from other hotels. Each room is just the same size and has wall to wall windows. You control everything by the old fashioned way of using a switch but you could use the 'mood pad' which is basically an iPad that controls the blinds and curtains for the windows and the TV. You can also choose the lighting to suit your mood. There are free movies on demand too. You can also link up your own iPad so that it streams on to the TV.

Bedroom
It is a different way of looking at things and the fresh approach is a winner. You are not a tourist here but a mobile citizen, as they say.

The bed was very comfy and with the washbasin in the room it did remind me of a certain French hotel chain. There is a separate toilet and shower area in the room.

The free Wi Fi was fast with high download speeds.

View from top floor bar/terrace
The bar area on the top floor overlooks the Tower of London and also has an outdoor seating area, that would be perfect for drinks on a hot summer evening.

I've never been woken by an alarm that sounds like the 'dawn chorus' of birds singing but this unusual alarm did wake me up.

Breakfast area
Breakfast was buffet style and as well as a continental breakfast there was a superb English breakfast available, also served buffet style.

The hotel is a very novel idea and different from anything else in the UK hotel market at the moment. Most of the other guests I spoke to seemed to be either middle aged tourists from the Home Counties or younger UK guests but there were also quite a lot of American and European tourists.

Yes, it is quirky but the staff were exceptionally friendly, the rooms very clean and it is certainly a different experience. They just need to open a hotel between London and Glasgow. What better place to open a hotel than in Yorkshire being in between these two cities.
