10 in 10: Ewan Bain

Ewan Bain, Brain Injury & Serious Injury Solicitor at Switalskis Solicitors is the latest regional business professional in the hot seat as we give him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

The nature of my work means I need to be flexible and responsive to evolving situations. I tend to start by checking and replying to emails and then planning in big tasks. My clients are vulnerable, and I need to react quickly to their needs, so no two days are the same.

What makes your company special?

The way we approach client handling with a personal and ‘Yorkshire’ approach.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Always act with integrity and try to do the right thing by clients and colleagues.

Do you dress up or down for work?

Smart casual. Shirt and trousers, but no tie.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year old self?

Don’t put so much pressure on yourself and hold your values dear.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

Bramall Lane, Sheffield. I appreciate not all of my colleagues will agree.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

By train. It gives me time to think. I don’t work when I’m travelling because of confidentiality and the sensitive nature of my cases. I have overheard far too many supposedly confidential phone conversations on trains which really irks me.

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

The East coast – Scarborough or Filey. The Harbour Bar in Scarborough is a particular favourite of mine.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

I love a good lamb bhuna curry. There are too many excellent curry houses in Yorkshire to single any out.

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?

The people – their character and their warmth.
