‘10 in 10’ Samantha Murray

Samantha Murray, occupational health business partner of Snaith-based workplace wellbeing firm Elite Executive, is the latest regional business professional in the hot seat as The Yorkshire Times gives her just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

When I’m in the office I usually work from 8am until around 5.00pm – with half an hour for my lunch. I tend not to work on Mondays and Fridays, but – if I need to – I’ll work from home, where my days are more flexible. Overall, my role is very varied – I can be doing anything from liaising with customers, finding new business and booking appointments, to reviewing contracts and processing payroll.

What makes your company special?

The location – we’re based in Snaith, which is right next to the famous M62 corridor. It’s a great site for businesses to easily get to us and for our nurses, who are out on the road visiting customers.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Speak to people how you’d like to be spoken to – I believe it’s important to address people in a professional and polite way. Also, always be open and fair, which will ultimately build good customer relationships.
Finally, pick-up the phone! Speak directly to your customers – especially if you don’t meet with them often – as this adds a personal touch and will establish a good working relationship.

Do you dress up or down for work?

I dress up when I’m in the office, as I feel it represents the company in a professional way. I love wearing dresses, as it makes me feel ready to tackle the day.

What piece of advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

Take in more advice from elders. When you’re a teenager, you tend to think you know it all already, but as you grow up you realise that isn’t the case.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

The John Smith’s Stadium is a ‘go to’ place for us – the open plan space creates a wonderful atmosphere, and brings everyone together. We’ve had numerous Christmas parties there.

Also the Grosvenor Casino in Huddersfield – we held a team building event here, and it was the perfect venue!

How do you prefer to travel for business?

Car, although if time wasn’t an issue, then by horse!

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

This is a tough one because we’re so spoilt with beautiful spots in the region, but my top place has to be Haworth. There is a wonderful, traditional sweet shop at the top of the cobbled street – it’s like going back in time.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

It has to be the Crab and Lobster near Thirsk. All of the fish dishes are delicious, so anything you choose is a winner!

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you are away?

The hills – Snaith is so flat and I love the countryside. And you can’t beat a cup of Yorkshire tea, so this is something I always miss!
