New Record Label Launches In Todmorden Hoping For Golden Success

Todmorden’s illustrious venue The Golden Lion in West Yorkshire established themselves in 2015. Over the years they have survived mother nature’s flash floods and last year’s run in with Calderdale council for painting their building yellow to brighten up their street in preparation for the Tour de Yorkshire.

Despite these temporary set backs, the Manager, Gig, remains optimistic, conjuring up the new chapter whilst flying the kindness banner from the heartbeat of this remarkable market town.

Local Creatives, international Musicians, Artists, DJs, friends and family of The Golden Lion have come together to help Waka (Richard Walker) and Gig (Matthanee) -landlords - raise money through January’s Go Fund Me page, set up by DJ and Out In The Sticks Promoter Russ Marland, to help the venue’s sustainable future, ahead of the record label launch Golden Lion Sounds in February 2021.

Waka and Gig are proud to announce their new venture. The specialist record label plans to release a monthly series of seven inch vinyl records, all limited and numbered featuring musicians and DJs who have played live or DJ-ed at The Golden Lion since its inception.

Russ used to run the legendary Out in the Sticks Club Night that brought world famous DJ’s to Todmorden such as Joey Negro and Full Intention.

“After I had a chat with friend Andrew Meecham a well-known name who’s hung out at The Golden Lion, DJ-ed and performed live at The Emperor Machine and Bizarre Inc., I was inspired to set up the venue’s very own independent record label Golden Lion Sounds”

So far Working Men’s Club, Goa Express, W.H.Lung, The Orielles, The Lounge Society, David Holmes, Jarvis Cocker, The Emperor Machine, Jane Weaver, Andy Votel, Crazy P, Earl Gateshead, Dub Smugglers, Nucleus Roots, Zion Train, Carlton Melton, Dead Sea Apes, Natalie Sharp (Lone Taxidermist) have all contributed tracks, which will be mastered by local solo artist and engineer Andrew Liles. Other well known names who have signed up to the worthy cause include actress Maxine Peake.

“We are so grateful to all our friends who want to be a part of this project. They’ve shown their belief in us and we all know that everything invested in this project will eventually come back to the music industry.” said Waka and Gig.

The Golden Lion have also launched a range of exclusive merchandise including T-shirts, sweatshirts, badges and totes designed by notorious artist Wall-Russ, a Dutch-Belgium designer based in Amsterdam and Bom Seo aka Bom Carrot illustrator, artist and singer from Korea.
