As the UK rushes towards electrification, there is a steady flood of new models about to hit the market. Here’s a taste of what is to come.
Hyundai INSTER
The INSTER is a new A-segment sub-compact urban EV with up to 220 miles of targeted driving range according to WLTP. The car’s footprint, striking exterior design and spacious interior deliver versatility in the A-segment.
There is plenty of sophisticated technology, safety features and EV capabilities as well as plenty of standard equipment which will doubtless delight buyers of this small, urban-friendly SUV.
Equipped with a 42kWh battery as standard, INSTER is also available with a Long-Range 49 kWh battery as an option. Both models are powered by a single motor that delivers 71.1kW (97PS) in the base variant and 84.5 kW (115PS) in the Long-Range car. Both versions offer 147 Nm of torque.
When using a 120kW DC High-Power charging station, INSTER can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes in optimal conditions. INSTER also comes equipped with an 11kW on-board charger as standard, while a battery heating system and high-efficiency heat pump are available.
The INSTER will launch this summer in Korea, but the UK is likely to have to wait until 2025. Expect prices from a little over £20,000 if the rumours are to be believed.
VW ID. Buzz GTX and ID. Buzz LWB variants
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has today announced specifications for the new ID. Buzz GTX and ID. Buzz LWB (long wheelbase) variants. Due in retailers and for delivery to customers later in 2024, prices for the LWB start at £59,545. Full pricing for the GTX will be released in due course.
The LWB models will provide a longer wheelbase for increased luggage capacity, a standard seven-seat layout and a larger 86kWh battery for even greater range. This model will prove to be ideal for campervan conversions.
The ID, Buzz Life LWB with 286PS, starts at £59,545 on the road and features a WLTP combined range of 291 miles. The Style model is priced from £64,345, the range dropping slightly to 286 miles. Both LWB models feature the same 286PS single motor as the normal wheelbase versions.
Available in the UK with 79kWh standard wheelbase, the ID. Buzz GTX is the high-performance flagship of the range. Powered by two electric motors providing four-wheel drive and a combined output of 340PS, the GTX is capable of 0-62mph in just 6.1 seconds.
The ID. Buzz GTX with normal wheelbase is available with five seats featuring a 40:60 split three-seat bench in the second row, or as a six-seater with two individual seats each in the second and third rows.
Externally, the dynamic and distinctive ID. Buzz GTX is identified by a unique front bumper treatment, plus a gloss black finish for the bespoke honeycomb grille design, the new side air guide elements, the GTX lettering and the exterior door mirror housings.
In addition, the exclusive GTX Black 21” 'Townsville' alloy wheel is standard equipment for the ID. Buzz GTX. The range of GTX wheel rims is also supplemented by an additional new 21-inch alloy wheel. A new Cherry Red solid paint finish is exclusive to ID. Buzz GTX, which can be specified with Mono Silver metallic as a two-tone paint finish.
Inside, dark tones underline the sporty character of the most powerful ID. Buzz, which is equipped with a black headliner. In addition, the seats feature a unique GTX design that’s enhanced by black ArtVelours Eco microfleece with a new diamond pattern as well as red contrasting seams and red piping. Red cross-stitching is used on the multifunction steering wheel, which is refined by a flash of red trim on its centre and chrome GTX lettering.
Charge Your EV For Less Than £10 A Month, Say Ohme
Drivers of electric cars could charge their EVs for less than £10 a month, according to Ohme, the UK’s largest dynamic smart charging company.
With electricity prices reducing from 1st July, EV drivers will already be able to enjoy lower charging costs, but they could make even greater savings when charging at home with a smart EV tariff with Ohme.
As the Standard Variable Tariff drops to 22.4p/kWh on 1st July, the lowest price in almost two years, drivers of electric vehicles will be able to enjoy greater savings when charging at home. However, a smart EV tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go could reduce a typical EV driver’s annual costs to £9.92 a month.
Ohme’s dynamic smart chargers can connect with the grid in real time, automatically adjusting to optimise the cost of charging and accessing all the times of the smartest, greenest and lowest cost energy tariffs.
Charging on the new Standard Variable Tariff in a typical EV for 6800 miles of driving (the UK annual average) would cost £382.50. On a smart EV tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go* however, the same mileage would cost just £119. The same distance in a petrol car would cost more than £1100.
Ohme is the official charger provider for Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai in the UK, as well as Mercedes-Benz, Polestar and the Volkswagen Group in the UK and Ireland and customers on the Motability scheme, the largest fleet operator in the UK. Ohme has been named as Best Chargepoint Manufacturer in the 2024 Irish EV awards.
