The brand new study, conducted by temporary car insurance experts Tempcover, surveyed over 2,000 British drivers on their attitudes towards driving under the influence. It revealed significant insights into risk-taking behaviours, social pressures, and little knowledge of the legal limits.
Key findings include:
Almost two in five people are more likely to take risks and drink-drive during the festive season compared to any other time of year.
Nearly half of surveyed drivers admitted to driving when they thought they may be over the limit, with over a quarter of people doing so more than once.
Three in 10 people felt pressured to let someone else drive despite being unsure about their sobriety, while 21.3% reported feeling pressured to drive despite knowing they were over the limit.
Awareness of the legal drink-driving limit is concerning. Only two in five respondents know the limit, while three in five admit they don’t know or are unsure of it.
Men are more likely to engage in risky behaviours: 10.3% of men admitted to driving when they thought they were over the limit several times, compared to 5.2% of women.
Following the new study, which revealed drink-driving habits across the country, Tempcover is encouraging drivers to take out Designated Driver Temporary Car Insurance. This short-term solution will help combat issues surrounding festive drink-driving behaviours after almost 48% of responders admitted to getting behind the wheel when over the limit.
This temporary insurance solution allows car owners to easily get a quote for trusted friends and family to legally drive their vehicle in under two minutes, making it easier than ever to arrange safe transport home if you’re attending an office party or seasonal gathering.
Jake Lambert at Tempcover, commented further on the findings:
“No one should ever feel pressured to drive or get behind the wheel after drinking. Not only is drink-driving illegal and has serious legal consequences, but it can lead to dangerous situations on the road not only for those over the limit but also for other drivers. There are always safer options to get home, and your safety, and others, should always come first.
"It's crucial to organise safe and responsible journeys home ahead of time, especially if you're planning to enjoy a few drinks. Getting a sober designated driver, like a trusted friend or family member, insured to drive your car is a simple way to ensure you have a safe, reliable option for getting home during the festive season.”
