When Jack Savoretti debuted in 2007 with Between the Minds, he demonstrated a knack for the breezy, seventies-inspired, easy-listening soft rock/pop sound that went on to define his subsequent career. As he steadily built his fanbase, more radio hits landed, and his albums started to soar up the chart. Then in 2021, he changed tack, releasing the chart-topping Europiana, paying tribute to the sounds that defined his childhood in Lugano.
The move allowed him a chance to reflect upon the mixed heritage parentage that he had enjoyed, and with his eighth,
Miss Italia, he pays tribute to his late Italian father. Written and recorded solely in Italian, the collection features guest appearances from Zucchero, Miles Kane, Natalie Imbruglia, Carla Morrison, Svegliaginevra, and Delilah Montagu. This album feels very personal to the man behind the music.
Having teased the album with the gorgeous Imbruglia duet, Ultime Parole, it was clear that the album would fit faultlessly into his earlier catalogue while showing echoes of the more playful approach to songwriting demonstrated by Europiana.
While the lead single,
Miss Italia, has Eurovision ballad-winning territory written all over it, it is the rather joyful kitsch sound of
Bada Bing, Bada Boom, and the catchy
Malinconia that really make the same big impression as the aforementioned single.
Miss Italia may not pack the same punch as his last album, but there is something very appealing about it. This is very easy listening territory, but sometimes that is something we all crave.
