Bucking The Trend - Appletons To Open In Knaresborough

Appleton’s Butchers, best-known for its handmade pork pies, is to open a further store in Knaresborough.

The shop will be the fifth Appleton’s, which also has stores in Ripon, Wetherby, York and Boroughbridge. Anthony and Isabel Sterne took over Appleton’s ten years ago, and have continued to operate throughout the pandemic, hand making all their goods ready to bake onsite.

Opening a new store on the high street in the current climate bucks the trend of closures and redundancies being seen nationwide. The shop will create new employment opportunities and the owners hope that people will continue to shop local and support local businesses.

Owner Anthony Sterne, said: “We are so excited to be joining the Knaresborough community and look forward to welcoming local residents, who have been hugely patient whilst we have redeveloped the shop.

“Although currently we’re not allowed to have a big opening event, we will be inviting suppliers and friends on an appointment basis, so we are able to comply with social distancing measures.”

To celebrate the opening, local residents will be treated to 15% off their purchases on production of the launch flyer, and those following Appleton’s on Facebook will be given the opportunity to win a hamper to mark the occasion.

The former Robinson’s Butchers has meticulously been renovated over four years, with a huge amount of unforeseen challenges.

Martin Sterne of Sterne Properties, which has managed the project, commented: “The medieval back wall was bowing out and the whole building was in danger of collapse.

“The ancient timber frame was in a serious state of disrepair. We were committed to sourcing materials that were inkeeping with the original ones. Part of the building dates back to the 17th Century, so it was hugely important to us that it retained its character and integrity.”

The shop will open on Tuesday 18th August 2020.
