Yolanda Del Peso Ramos, Language Expert at Preply commented:
“As the International Day of Sign Languages approaches, at Preply, we celebrate the rich diversity of communication and the power of language to connect people.
"It’s exciting to see the British government taking a significant step forward by introducing British Sign Language (BSL) as a GCSE subject in England from September 2025. This initiative highlights the importance of sign language and recognises it as a vital form of communication that, like any other language, deserves widespread understanding and respect. Offering everyone the opportunity to learn even basic BSL is a fantastic way to promote inclusion and bridge communication gaps.
"This moment is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness about BSL and advocate for greater inclusion of the deaf community. When communicating with someone who uses BSL, remember to be considerate: face them directly, avoid covering your mouth, and continue the conversation even if some parts are missed. Inclusivity is built on patience, understanding, and openness - if you're unsure about someone’s preferred communication style, don't hesitate to ask. Simply being mindful can make all the difference."
