German cellist Raphaela Gromes delivers a heartfelt performance of Valentin Silvestrov’s moving
Prayer for Ukraine, written in 2014. Her interpretation captures the depth of the piece with beautiful sensitivity and tone.
During her concert in Kyiv, Gromes experienced the impact of the prayer on the audience. Many were moved to tears, and she received overwhelming reactions, including heartfelt gifts from the audience. The subsequent recording of the piece was one of her most emotional musical moments.
The main work on the disc is Dvorak’s melodic Cello Concerto. Gromes’ interpretation brings out the delightful colour and intensity of the piece, showcasing her phrasing, skill, and energetic performance. The collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and Volodymyr Sirenko is superb.
The orchestral elements, especially the brass and horns, are excellent. While the recording sometimes favours the solo cello, the overall performance is commendable.
Dvořák's
Cello Concerto is significant for Gromes, as it was her father's favourite concerto. The album also includes tracks by other composers, such as Hanna Havrylets and Yuri Shevchenko, representing a powerful and moving program.
Overall, the album offers a delightful rendition of a popular classic alongside some lesser-known gems, all delivered with exquisite beauty and emotion by a talented cellist.
