Hartlepool has woken up to an historic win for new Conservative MP Jill Mortimer, who has taken the Labour held seat.

The Conservatives took the seat winning 15,529 votes giving them a majority of 6,940, winning more than 50% of the vote.

Jill Mortimer who has been farming in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, where she is also a district councillor, said it was a "truly historic" result and that "she is the first woman ever to be elected as MP for this town."

"Labour have taken people in Hartlepool for granted for too long."

Undoubtedly, Brexit was still a major influence in the constituency. Boris Johnson has been seen to have kept his promise to get Brexit done and coupled, with the probable switch of one in four voters previously voting for the Brexit Party, perhaps the result should not be a surprise. More than 70% of voters in Hartlepool voted for Brexit.
