Coronavirus: Three Tier Alert Levels Announced

Prime minister Boris Johnson has announced a series of three new alert levels, but has ruled out a national lockdown. He said that evidence shows that "changing our behaviour" saves lives.

Medium Alert Level : This covers most of the country. The Rule of Six continues, as does the 10pm curfew.

High Alert Level : The household-to-household transmission is targetted by preventing all mixing indoors between different households or support bubbles.

Very High Alert Level : All social mixing is prohibited indoors and in private gardens. Pubs and bars will be closed in Very High Alert areas.

Mr Johnson announced that the government will provide about £1bn of new funding to local authorities across the country in addition to the £3.6bn Towns Fund.

In response, Labour leader Keir Starmer said that nobody "should be under any illusions about where this is heading or the need for decisive action".
