To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, the Ripon Community Poppy Project started on the idea of building a Churchill AVRE tank early in January 2023.
From a drawing obtained from Bovington Tank Museum the talented crafts people worked out that the dimensions to build a full-sized model would be 24' long x 9' wide x 7' high.
The Stats
23000 balls of wool used
1885 knitted 8-inch squares for the tank, each square taking up to 3 hours to knit
Approximately 75,000 man/woman hours on the project
Approximately £3000 worth of timber to build the frame
Organisations involved in helping included Community Poppy Project, The Men's Shed and Jennyruth Workshops.
