Do you have the speed to Beat Badger?

The Kirklees Light Railway in Clayton West, near Huddersfield will be the setting for one of the ultimate battles - Human versus Machine! The humans will be the athletes of the Denby Dale Travellers Athletic Club and the machine will be Badger a narrow gauge steam locomotive. The race will take place on Tuesday 24th June 2014.

In this annual event, Badger will be confined to the 3 1/4 mile railway line from Shelley to Clayton West station. The athletes will use the footpaths, bridleways and roads to reach the station at Clayton West. This gives the runners a longer route which includes a few sharp climbs. The race has taken place every June since 2006. Each runner makes a small donation to enter with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

General Manager of the Kirklees Light Railway, Stuart Ross, was enthusiastic about the event he said "The race works really well, our trains take around 22 minutes to travel from Shelley to Clayton West, one runner in the past has completed the route in 21 minutes previously. With the train being so closely matched to the pace of the runners has led to some quite nail biting finishes over the last few years!" he added further "The runners have won the race six times and the train has managed it twice. With the proceeds for the event going to Cancer Research UK this is certainly an event where it is the taking part that counts. We all have friends and relatives who have been affected by Cancer and to support a charity that undertakes invaluable and expensive research with the aim to Beat Cancer is a great privilege. It is a great fun evening for a good cause and it is an excellent opportunity for us to work with the local community."

As the train was victorious in 2013, an intense battle can be expected this year!
