Footloose At York Theatre Royal

Our theatre going duo Emilie Moon and Claire Haddleton report a huge array of talent was on show at the opening night of Footloose at the York Theatre Royal. The well-known names of Jake Quickenden and Darren Day led an accomplished cast of all-round entertainers.

They not only acted, sang and danced but they themselves provided all the music from the stage. Every time we looked, someone different was playing the piano; others impressed on the guitar, drums, flute, clarinet, saxophone and more. Incredible versatility and talent.

Joshua Hawkins convincingly plays the leading part of Ren, a Chicago boy who moves to a rural American town only to discover that the Reverend Moore (Darren Day) has banned all dancing in the township. Hawkins won the hearts of the audience, falling in love with the Reverend’s daughter, Ariel (played by Lucy Munden).

Their duet of Almost Paradise in Act 2 was particularly moving and the harmonies quite exquisite. Quickenden, as Willard the cowboy, brought the house down with his excellent acting. His comedy was timed perfectly and the audience laughed and laughed as he strutted around the stage in gold hot pants during Holding Out for a Hero. Darren Day’s stunning singing voice filled the theatre effortlessly and he fitted the role of the vicar perfectly. The strong supporting cast were all well received, each one playing their part energetically in such a spectactular show.

This was a show which cleverly balanced the drama with some highly energetic song and dance numbers. The renditions of Footloose were particularly spirited and great fun, showing off Matt Cole’s clever choreography. The set was skilfully designed and each scene moved from one to another seamlessly. Costumes were vibrant and bright and the lighting effects added to the whole performance.

This was a foot-stompingly fabulous show which shouldn’t be missed! Footloose the Musical in on tour throughout the country until August.
